Before the advent of electronics and of course computers, games have been part of human activities. Games also have been in use as a playful way to imbibe knowledge. In this post, I will list 15 educational games for all levels of human stages.
We previously wrote an article on the role of artificial intelligence in education. A lot of educational games employ AI technology to understand the behavior pattern of a player. This is used to enhance the learning experience and to improve on his or her weaknesses.
Minecraft’s games and Fortnite games have become so popular, that applying the same features in education will be of great advantage.
What is an Educational Game?
Educational Games can be referred to as games that are specifically designed for educational purposes in order to give educational values. It utilizes all the features of normal games but with specific objective goals to achieve.
Educational games are beneficial to kids, students, and even adults. We have made the list of educational games according to your desired need.
Please note that educational games are different from gamification in education.
Educational games for students
Now, let us start the list with educational games for students.
1. Kahoot!
Kahoot! is a global learning platform company that wants to empower everyone, including children, students, and employees, to unlock their full learning potential.
The learning platform makes it easy for any individual or corporation to create, share, and play learning games that drive compelling engagement. Kahoot! games can be played anywhere, in person or virtually, using any device with an internet connection.
2. Math Blaster!
Math Blaster products have been used in classrooms and homes worldwide for over 15 years. Mathblaster.com is the online hub for outer space-based MMO gaming. Membership to Mathblaster.com extends to include JumpStart as well. Through a partnership with Majesco Entertainment Company, the brand also transitioned onto
Nintendo DS.
Prime Adventure extends the proven brand into an age-appropriate handheld platform. Math Blaster learning apps are available on iPad/iPhone and Android devices. Through a first-of-its-kind model, Math Blaster mobile and online games are linked for connected play at home or on the go.
3. Atari: 80 Classic Games
Atari: 80 Classic Games in One!, is a video game collection of 1980 video games previously published by Atari, Inc. and Atari Corporation, reproducing Atari’s games from its arcade and Atari 2600 game console platforms. Many games permit one to play each title at varying speeds, with time limits, or with a shifting color palette.
Extra contents include original arcade artwork and scans of the instruction manuals for the Atari 2600 games, video interviews with Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, Windows desktop themes, DirectX 9 runtime, Adobe Reader 5.1 English version.
4. 1000 Words
The 1000 Words game is a mobile app for a collection of games. You will have to find one or more words to solve every puzzle.
Choose from the 1000 words games. All games are listed in this genre and similar subgenres that are related to the category of 1000 words games.
5. WizMo’s Workshop: Dragons
WizMo’s Workshop: Dragons of Frozzbokk is an educational game created for kids aged three to six. It is meant to stimulate the imagination of children and teaches color and shape recognition while developing hand-eye coordination.
Children can explore the Workshop, help WizMo build different machines, collect prizes to show off to their friends, and learn while playing with WizMo’s little dragons.
A Force More Powerful is a 1999 feature-length documentary film and a 2000 PBS series written and directed by Steve York about nonviolent resistance movements around the world. Executive producers were Dalton Delan and Jack DuVall. Peter Ackerman was the series editor and principal content advisor.
Institutional support for the film included funding from the United States Institute of Peace and the Albert Einstein Institution. The film played in festivals worldwide and was broadcast nationally on the United States television network PBS in September 2000. It was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Historical Program.
7. Yogi Bear’s Math Ad
Yogi Bear’s Math Adventures AKA Sparky’s Math Adventures is an educational puzzle-solving game released in 1990, for DOS systems.
It allows children to learn math using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Grade levels can be selected from 1st through 6th grade. The games are timed as you work through math problems by selecting the correct answer using Yogi Bear.
Educational games for kids
1. Prodigy
Prodigy is a game based on mathematics learning with the standard aligned game for 1st to 8th-grade students and their teachers and parents worldwide.
It has an innovative approach to game-based learning, propelled to become one of the most popular tools in North American classrooms. Millions of students use Prodigy to practice curriculum-aligned math skills — all while playing a game they love.
Kids between 6-12 years can play it, and it is available on PC, Android, and iOS.
2. Thinkrolls 2
With Thinkrolls 2, kids can learn about force, aerodynamics, buoyancy, and electricity and even get a taste of quantum physics while you navigate your Thinkrolls through 270 levels of science-filled mazes in this fun logic puzzle game.
Parents take pride in their children’s achievements, as they stretch their brains and solve increasingly challenging physics puzzles, all while having fun! Each puzzle gradually introduces a new science concept in an accessible, easy-to-understand way.
Thinkrolls 2 is an enlightening logic puzzler for kids 3-9.
3. ABC Kids
ABC Kids is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s part-time channel, broadcasting shows between the hours of 5 am and 7:30 pm for children 6 and under on each local Australian channel.
It is home to trusted and loved preschool programs. Learn, play and explore with our games, apps, songs, clips, print and color, craft, and more.
4. Duck Duck Moose
This is another developer on Google Play with a bunch of good educational Android games for kids. Their good games include Duck Duck Moose Reading, Fish School, and Moose Math.
These educational games help to teach kids how to read and do basic math with colors, shapes, and problem-solving.
5. Tinybop
Tinybop is a Brooklyn-based studio creating educational products, for play at home and in the classroom, to spark the curiosity of kids around the world today. It has dozens of learning-oriented apps and we’ve been fans for years.
They currently offer Tinybop Schools subscription, which features ten science apps and classroom support, for free through the summer to help-out parents and kids while schools are closed.
Educational games for adults
1. Two Dots
The purpose of Two Dots is simply, but highly addictive educational games for adults. The game tasks you to connect one dot to another in order to make spares or rectangles as a way of testing your speed and color-matching skills.
Trying to plan out how to make your next square can help get you creative. This is a great way for adults to kill time and to learn as well.
2. Eve Echoes
This is a mobile spinoff of the Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) role-playing game known as Eve-online. It brings the Eve Online experience to mobile devices.
Players pave their own paths across a sandbox by choosing one of the four character races: Caldari, Minmatar, Gallente, and Amar.
3. Riddles
Just so you know, Crossword puzzles, math riddles, and other brain-teasers contribute to the development of memory and attention skills.
Solution-oriented thinking, which is one of the most important functions of intelligence, can be improved with the help of riddles. They can also be used to improve vocabulary, memory, general knowledge, and communication skills.
Final Thoughts
Playing educational games has so many benefits, so it should be encouraged amongst kids, teens, and adults. Although, many use it as a form of relaxation. It has a lot of academic values.
Online educational games also give players the ability to have a challenge with a real person virtually, rather than always competing with the computer. But teachers and parents should properly guide children about online safety.
