This article contains the autobiography of Pat Ugwu II and this is how my story should be told.
OVERVIEW
Mr. Patrick Chigoziri Ugwu (a.k.a. Pat Ugwu II) was born to the Late Mr. Patrick Umeha and Mrs. Veronica Uzoaku Ugwu (Nee Ugwu) in Ebe, Udi Local Government of Enugu State.
Uncle Pat, as he is fondly called, is a kindhearted man who strongly believes in the Christian principles and doctrines of the Catholic Church. Importantly, He likes to offer help to humanity in his capacity, especially in the area of digital literacy.
EDUCATION
Pat Ugwu II started his primary education at Central School Ebe in the year 1988 and continued at Iva-Valley Primary School Enugu where he completed his First School Leaving Examination in the year 1993. His secondary education was at Community Secondary School Iva-Valley, Enugu and he finished in the year 1999.
He gained admission to higher education at OSISATECH Polytechnic, Enugu in the year 2006 where he completed both his National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in 2010. In addition, Pat later did a degree programme at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT)Â and obtained a Bachelor’s Science in Education (B.Sc. Ed.) in Computer Science Education in the year 2013.
In 2015, Uncle Pat secured postgraduate admission for his master’s (M.Sc.) degree programme in Computer Science Education at ESUT. He completed the programme in the year 2019, but Covid-19 pandemic delayed his final defence till 2021.
CAREER
Pat started his career in the year 2000, a year after his secondary school, where he learned motorcycle spare parts trading. He started the business in 2002 but quit it a year after to venture into academics. While he was seeking admission into a higher institution, he worked with Kezz Photo Lab, and he later became an event photographer for a few years.
He went for computer training in the year 2003 where he mastered the use of Microsoft Office 97 packages and graphic design software. As an undergraduate, Pat worked in many computer schools in Enugu as a Computer Instructor. After his graduation, he started his own computer training school in 2010, he trained numerous people in ICT skills over the years.
Mr. Ugwu was later employed by his alumni school OSISATECH Polytechnic Enugu as an ICT officer in March 2011 following the recommendations of one of his lecturers. He worked as an ICT Officer in the exams and records unit. In the year 2014, he was given some computer courses to teach in the Department of Computer Science as a graduate assistant.
In 2019, he was appointed as an Education Officer II by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), an agency in the Nigeria Federal Government (under the Ministry of Education), they are in charge of teacher registration and licensing. Following this, his previous appointment with OSISATECH Enugu was reviewed to be on a consultancy basis for the then newly equipped ICT Unit of the institution. He is also a Lecturer in their Weekend (Part-Time) Programme.
CONTRIBUTIONS
Below are some of the various contributions made by Mr. Patrick Ugwu.
As a Computer Instructor
In the year 2005, Uncle Pat participated as a computer instructor in the training of 40 students selected from the College of Immaculate Conception Enugu and Girls High School Emene on computer literacy. The training was done by Action Aid Academy at New Haven Enugu. It was sponsored by Global Health Awareness Research Foundation (GHARF), a non-governmental organization. GHARF said the training was part of their community development.
Subsequently, in 2007, 140 secondary school teachers were drawn from the 17 Local Government Areas in Enugu state to participate in training and learning of basic computer operations. The programme was organized by the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Enugu State chapter. Pat was one of the lead instructors and provided part of the training materials. It was the first time for most of the teachers to have touched the computer in their lifetime.
Pat also trained numerous students on SIWESS or Industrial Training (IT) at ABC Technics Ltd., Agbani Road, Enugu before starting his own computer training school in 2010 known as Cedars Computing Center at Agbani Road, Enugu. He trained many individual and corporate bodies, including police personnel.
As an ICT Officer
Following his employment at OSISATECH Polytechnic, Enugu. Mr. Patrick Chigoziri Ugwu computerized the processes of the institution. He designed and computerized the production of statements of results, academic transcripts, and electronic record keeping of student results.
He also designed and launched OSISATECH’s official website. In the year 2020, Pat created the online platform that the school used to teach and conduct online examinations during the COVID-19 global lockdown.
Online Learning Resources
In the year 2014, Mr. Pat launched his own personal website, where he teaches digital literacy. The website features blog posts, online courses, video tutorials, and so on.
The main purpose of the website is to promote the use of technology in teaching and learning and to enlighten the public on digital literacy.
RELIGIOUS LIFE
Pat was born a Catholic, and he remains in the Catholic faith to date. As a member of Block Rosary Crusade, he was elected a centre president in 1994. He began catechism classes in that same year and always takes the role of an instructor whenever the Rev. Sr. in charge of teaching their class was not around. Pat received his first holy communion in the year 1995.
After the reception of his first holy communion, Pat joined Altar Night (Mass Servant) in 1995 and rose to become the President of St. Patrick Parish Iva Pottery Altar Servers Association, Enugu in 1998.
In 1999, Pat joined the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of Nigeria (CCRN), Jesus the Light Prayer Group, Iva-Valley Enugu where he did his “Life in the Spirit Seminar”. Pat also joined many sub-grouped and participated in many CCRN activities both at the parish and diocesan levels. He also held different positions which includes the Chairman of the Morning Call group, and secretary to the Marriage committee amongst others.
Recently, Brother Pat joined Kingdom-Word Ministry, a non-denomination ministry, and also follows some Men of God online for Bible and religious studies. He shares his Christian knowledge on his social media accounts.
PHILOSOPHY
Pat believes that “the meaning of life is to give life meaning”. He also agrees with the Igbo adage that says “live and let live”.
